During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. (president: John F. Kennedy) and Soviet Union (leader: Khrushchev) were closest to the brink of nuclear war. The Soviet Union deployed nuclear missiles in Cuba in response to the U.S. deployment of missiles in Turkey, resulting in growing tension between the two countries. As depicted in the political cartoon by the two people in the top left corner, the constant possibility of mutually assured destruction was extremely stressful to countries worldwide, as it is unsure whether a nuclear war will actually take place. This increased stress among other countries would have been unnecessary if it were not for the struggle of power and influence between capitalism and communism.
